We continue our tradition of presenting outstanding young classical solo artists in this year’s edition of Great Masters, Young Stars. We are delighted that Lynne Bai, 2016 winner of the Ylda Novik Memorial Concerto Competition for Pianists, will join us to perform Edvard Grieg’s one and only piano concerto. This beautifully orchestrated piece is full of dramatic contrasts. Our program also features two water-inspired works: Smetana’s symphonic poem The Moldau and Britten’s Four Sea Interludes from the opera Peter Grimes. Conducted by Victoria Gau.

Join us for an intimate chamber orchestra performance celebrating the beauty of French music. Our program features Fauré’s delightfully delicate Pavane, as well as Ravel’s stunning orchestral arrangements of Debussy’s Sarabande and Danse. We are delighted that mezzo-soprano Magdalena Wòr will join us for Berlioz’s Les Nuits d’Été. Her voice and musicianship have exactly the kind of dusky warmth needed for a song cycle that follows the course of love: from youthful innocence, to loss and finally renewal. The concert will take a turn towards the surreal with Milhaud’s Le boeuf sur le toit, which portrays a motley crew of characters who frequent a Brazilian bar. Conducted by Victoria Gau

A Night in Paris is a Capital City Symphony main season event.

This program brings together two perennial favorites, Johannes Brahms and Ludwig van Beethoven. Our performance of Brahms’ Violin Concerto in D Major will feature the violin winner of the Johansen International Competition, Lara Boschkor from Germany, as our special guest soloist. We are looking forward to collaborating with this promising young player! We will also play Beethoven’s elegant and programmatic Symphony No. 6 in F Major, “Pastoral”. The work presents the composer’s interpretation of the joy of being in the countryside, the beauty and power of nature, and the fun and creativity of the country folk.

About Lara Boschkor

Violinist Lara Boschkor, then 15, won first prize violin and $10,000 at the 2015 Johansen International Competition for Young String Players. She came to wide attention at the age of 13 in 2013 when she won first prize at the 7th Henryk Szeryng InternationalViolin Competition in Mexico, as well as first prize at the 12th Carl Flesch InternationalViolin Competition in Hungary.

Ms. Boschkor was born in Germany in October 1999, and is of German-Hungarian parentage. She began her violin studies at the age of four, and won first prize at several European competitions at an early age. In 2012, she won first prize at the Jeunesses International Violin Competition in Bucharest, Romania.That same year, she became the youngest prize winner at the 19th International Brahms Violin Competition in Austria. In 2013, she was invited to perform the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in Japan with the Osaka Symphony Orchestra and conductor Yuki Miyagi.

Ms. Boschkor started her studies at an early age at the Precollege Division of the Hochschule für Musik Cologne and Detmold, and then went on to study with Liviu Prunaru at the Con- servatorium van Amsterdam. Other important musical mentors include Erik Schumann at Hochschule für Musik Frankfurt and Kolja Blacher at Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin. She has received support from the Bruno Frey Foundation and the Foundation Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben. She plays on a 1740 Carlo Antonio Testore violin generously loaned by the Foundation Stiftung Musikleben.

The two works on the program are united through their touching meditations on life and death, heaven and healing. We open with David T. Little, an accomplished contemporary composer called by The New Yorker ‘one of the most imaginative young composers’ on the scene. His piece haunted topography (2011/13) is inspired by the story of a mother who was still haunted by the loss of her son in Vietnam decades after his death. She longed to see a map of the place where her boy had died, and when she was shown one by Moe Armstrong of Vet2Vet she was finally able to begin to heal. Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 was completed in 1900 and includes the touching song ‘Das himmlische Leben” (Heavenly Life), which reflects a child’s view of heaven. We look forward to collaborating with our guest soloist, soprano, Jennifer Casey Cabot, on this performance.

Our contribution to this year's INTERSECTIONS festival at Atlas is a reprise of our popular collaboration with Go-Go Symphony. We are delighted to welcome John Devlin back to the C.C.S. podium for this event. Join us to enjoy the funky energy of Go-Go music with the power and precision of a symphony orchestra!

Go-Go music is Washington DC's own sub genre of funk, characterized mainly by relentless percussion and audience participation. The "pocket beat" is the classic swinging go-go beat popularized in the 1970's by Chuck Brown, the "Godfather of Go-Go."

Let's Make Music! is a Capital City Symphony Main Season Event.

Join us in celebration of three American composers: you’ll find new treasures and old favorites united by their connection to dance. We’re excited to perform the world premier of Charlie Barnett’s Mid-Century Mambo; it’s all about rhythm and joy. It’s hard to believe that Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring was premiered way back in 1944. This iconic piece of Americana still feels fresh and new. Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story complete the program. This piece is a whirlwind tour through the memorable music of one of the greatest musicals of all time. It includes everything from the wild dance numbers to the touching romantic theme.

An American Tale is a Capital City Symphony Main Season Event.

This summer we partnered with Gourmet Symphony on their Taste Your Music project. This community outreach project involves a series of music and dining events at local charitable organizations including Bread for the City, Miriam's Kitchen and SOME. Several Capital City Symphony musicians are involved in these events.

Join Gourmet Symphony and Capital City Symphony for an evening of curated cocktails, cuisine, and classical music benefiting Taste Your Music, the community outreach project that feeds and inspires DC's residents in need.

Enjoy a custom 4-course menu designed by Executive Chef Anthony Lombardo (The Hamilton) and Chef/Owner Andrew Markert (Beuchert's Saloon), in collaboration with Gourmet Symphony's artistic and culinary curators. From Mozart to Mahler to American composer Samuel Barber, each pairing draws inspiration from the lyrics sung, the composers' cultural heritage, and our own work with the project's Charity Partners this summer.

Under the baton of Maestro John Devlin, the Gourmet Symphony orchestra will delight attendees with its dynamism and musicianship. The 53-piece ensemble also features guest performers from Capital City Symphony, as ` as special appearances by acclaimed soprano Mandy Brown.
